2016 Knights Bridge West Block Chardonnay
Abundant aromas of brioche, chamomile , candied lemon peel, crystalized ginger and honeyed pear entice the nose and follow on the palate. Flavors slowly unfold revealing brioche and buttery pasta with an interplay of lemon, chamomile and honey. Full-bodied, yet light on the palate with a brightness and energy, the wine finishes with a thirst-quenching minerality.
The hallmark of our West Block Chardonnay is its rich, opulent texture that pairs well with more elaborate cuisine. We suggest white fish with a cream sauce, lobster with sauce Nantua, or braised chicken with a hearty mushroom sauce.
After several years of drought, the 2016 vintage welcomed much needed rains. Bud-break was a bit early due to the early spring warm weather and coupled with the rains resulted in small and intensely flavored berries. Two brief heat spikes interrupted an otherwise steady and moderate summer, punctuated by a cool August, all of which allowed the fruit an extended ripening period.
Select fruit from the western sections of Block 9 of our Estate vineyard was handpicked in the early morning hours of September 15. The grapes were gently pressed and the juiced moved to 100% new French oak barrels for fermentation at cool temperatures. Once fermentation was complete, the wine remained in barrel and aged on fine lees, gently stirring bi-weekly for 14 months after malolactic fermentation. The wine spent a total of 18 months in barrel before bottling, adding complexity, richness and finesse to the finished wine.
